GPA Improvement Tips
🎯 Prioritize high credit unit courses — An A in a 4-unit subject boosts your GPA far more than an A in a 1-unit elective.
🔄 Retake failed courses early — Carry-overs compound; tackle them in the next available semester before they pile up.
📚 Focus on 3–4 unit core courses — These form the backbone of your degree classification. Never miss lectures for them.
📅 Plan with the Predictor — Use the Predictor tab to calculate exactly what GPA you need each semester to reach your goal.
🤝 Form study groups — Peer teaching deepens understanding and consistently improves exam performance.
📝 Never skip coursework & CATs — Continuous assessment is 30–40% of your final grade. Every mark counts.
🚀 Aim for A in new courses — Fresh semesters are your best chance to recover from a dip in CGPA.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is First Class in Nigerian universities?
First Class Honours requires a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00 on the 5.0 scale — the highest academic distinction, equivalent to Summa Cum Laude. Fewer than 5% of students per cohort typically achieve this.
Is 3.49 CGPA a Second Class Upper (2:1)?
No. A 3.49 falls just below the 2:1 threshold of 3.50. At 3.49 you'd be classified as Second Class Lower (2:2). Always confirm with your university registrar.
How is CGPA calculated in Nigeria?
CGPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Units Attempted. Quality Points per course = Grade Points × Credit Units. Example: A (5 pts) in a 3-unit course = 15 quality points.
How do I convert my 5.0 CGPA to a 4.0 scale?
Formula: 4.0 Scale = (CGPA ÷ 5.0) × 4.0. Example: 4.50 → 3.60. Use the Converter tab for instant results.
Do carry-over courses affect my CGPA?
Yes. An F grade carries 0 quality points but the credit units still count, pulling CGPA down. When you retake and pass, most universities replace the old grade. Confirm your school's specific retake policy.
Is a 2:2 degree good in Nigeria?
Absolutely. A Second Class Lower is a valid, recognised degree. Many successful Nigerians hold a 2:2. Your skills, certifications, and work ethic carry you far beyond any number.

How the Calculation Works
GPA Formula
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Units) ÷ Σ(Credit Units)
Example: (5×3) + (4×2) + (3×3) = 15+8+9 = 32 ÷ 8 = 4.00
Weighted CGPA Formula (Semester Entry)
CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Semester Units) ÷ Σ(Semester Units)
Example: (4.0×24) + (3.5×22) = 96+77 = 173 ÷ 46 = 3.76
